Movie discussion :Tanwa Savage
Double standards in Nigerian marriages.
I don't know if you guys have watched this movie, Tanwa Savage. If you're expecting me to say, go and watch it, then I’m sorry. Don’t watch it unless you're prepared to be irritated and annoyed. The movie is seriously cringe. But that is not why I’m here. This is not a review. I just want to discuss some things I noticed.
So, I’ll just give a quick overview of the movie. The man is married, but his wife is unable to conceive. He then starts a relationship with two different women in his quest for a child. And throughout all this, his wife doesn't put up much of a fight.
Now, when the wife notices that the two sidechicks are pregnant and she is still very much babyless, out of desperation she sleeps with another man and gets pregnant for him.
It turns out that none of the babies of the side chicks belong to the husband. He then begins to suspect the paternity of the baby his wife is carrying and wonder if he's fertile. His wife outs herself as a cheat and her husband sends her packing.
If you've read this far, I hope you've noticed a very disturbing fact. The man cheated twice. Not once but twice! But he is excused because he is searching for a child. And his wife is completely complacent. But when the tables turn and she cheats on him for the same reason—to have a child. He sends her packing.
Why are men allowed to get away with things that women could never get away with? Like a guy could get away with an untidy room, clothes everywhere room smelling like death and we'd be like okay, boys will be boys. But let a girl just have some clothes out of place. What you'll be hearing is her being called a pig and being asked that if this is how she will behave in her husband’s house.
A man can divorce you if you disrespect him. But you can't leave the marriage if he beats you.
Women are expected to tolerate a lot of shit that men can't stand. A man can divorce you if you disrespect him. But you can't leave the marriage if he beats you. If that isn't screaming double standards then I don’t know what is.
Please women let’s not stand for rubbish and nonsense. Let us stand up for ourselves instead of being complacent in our abuse.
