If you've been listening to and reading Feminist Inc you'd know that we talk about all things feminism and women.
But I recently started the 30 days to body acceptance Challenge: An invitation to feel good in your own skin. And some of you might be wondering that how does this relate to feminism. The truth is feminism and body acceptance have a lot in common and we cannot talk about one without talking about the other.
Feminism is about recognizing the systemic barriers that women and girls face in society due to their sex and gender, and about striving to create a more equitable society for all regardless of gender. It’s about challenging the social norms, expectations, and stereotypes that have been placed on women and girls, and working to create a world in which women and girls are valued, respected, and treated equally.
On the other hand, body acceptance is a way of challenging the “thin ideal” that has been perpetuated by the media and popular culture. It is a rejection of the notion that thinness is the only form of beauty, and an embrace of the beauty that can be found in all forms and sizes.
The link between body acceptance and feminism is about recognizing that the patriarchal society we live in has created a certain standard of beauty and value, and that this standard has been used to silence and oppress women and girls. The patriarchy has told girls that they need to look a certain way to be desirable. And seeing as feminism wants to dismantle the patriarchy...
Body acceptance and feminism are both necessary components of the fight for gender equality. They are a way of empowering ourselves and others, and a call to reject oppressive beauty standards. By accepting and embracing our bodies, we can create a more inclusive and equitable society.
At the end of the day, feminism wants to achieve the same goals as the body positivity movement.
